Though I painted this piece several years ago, I still have a reverence for it. That is a sign for me that it is a good painting. Painting on location impresses many sensations into my memory. While mixing my paint for this piece, the pine needles kept dropping into my palette and I remember picking them out. Each time I paint, I tackle something that is a little harder than what has gone before it. In this case it was unclear to me how to depict the water. In a fit of frustration, I rubbed the paint horizontally across the page and to my delight the strokes produced something that I could work with. This taught me never to give up on a piece and that sometimes impatience is a good thing.

Whistler’s Bend Park is located in Douglas County, Oregon, about 13 miles east of Roseburg off Highway 138. It is on the North Umpqua River and is said to have good fishing.
