The white of the rapids is bare paper. I do not use white paint in my pieces. The challenge, then of course, is to not paint the entire surface. This is easier to say and harder to do, as one gets wrapped up in laying down the brush strokes. The other challenge was to paint the rocks beneath the water as well as the reflections on the surface.

For this piece, I carted my equipment down an embankment and sat practically straddling my subject. In the summer, I try to paint on weekdays, but in this case, it was a Saturday. I got to the park early, when almost no one was there. A few folks passed me while I painted, nicely giving me my privacy. I go into sort of a deep reverie while painting and it was quite a shock for me when I climbed back up the bank to go home and saw the park filled with noisy picnickers. I felt like I was coming out of a time warp.
