This piece took several on–location days in hot, summer sun to complete. It was quite a challenge to depict still water, a boat wake, waterfalls and rapids all in one piece. I like the color changes of the water, especially the seafoam green near the falls. Fortunately, the motor boat and the skier made enough passes that I could sketch them in. Later, I sought reference photos in order to paint the boat’s wake. I believe I took some artistic license regarding how close the boat got to the falls, in order to fit the action into the painting, but still he went closer than I would have been comfortable with.

It was after painting all the small details in this piece, that I decided to continue working on the same size paper, but work larger and less detailed. Painting with a 3–haired brush is tedious. I think that the brush strokes are as important as the subject. In this piece, the brush strokes in the foam at the base of the falls are some of the best strokes in the piece. They were painted rapidly as I “felt” the motion of the water. Note that I do not use white paint. The white in this piece is white paper that I carefully try not to cover with paint. A good trick!

Winchester Dam has a fish ladder where vistors can watch salmon and steelhead as they swim by in the North Umpqua River. It is off Interstate 5 just north of Roseburg, Exit 129.
